Use of the 2-component admixture system MasterSuna SBS 6080 / MasterGlenium 700 using the practical example of EDGE East Side Berlin

Project Description

The EDGE East Side Berlin, located on Warschauer Straße, aims to become Berlin's tallest office building. Standing at 140 meters, it will only be surpassed by the Berlin TV Tower. This new tower is designed to meet the highest standards in environmental sustainability, technology, and modern workspaces. For this project, a pumpable concrete mix C 40/50 was developed to reduce CO2 content by 50% compared to a reference C 40/50 mix based on 400 kg CEM II/B-S 42.5 N. The challenge was to create a low-cement concrete pumpable over 275 meters, including 140 meters vertically. Our solution utilized MasterSuna SBS 6080 to achieve consistent workability.

Initial Situation and Task

The challenges of creating a CO2-optimized concrete include finding suitable, locally available raw materials, low water content, high superplasticizer content, and a medium to high fine material content. High viscosity, significant stiffening, and insufficient robustness are also expected.

Proposed Solution

The mix design was developed by Master Builders Solutions within normative regulations, considering the specified concrete properties. Numerous concrete tests, including SLIPER tests, were conducted in our Staßfurt laboratory. Before main pours, the concrete was successfully pumped over a 63 m test track. During August pours, with precise sensor and algorithm control in TB plant and alcemy mixers, the concrete maintained its initial consistency despite high concrete temperatures of 30°C and air temperatures of 35°C.
