The Background
Lion Nathan’s brewery is situated on a 16.7 hectare site in South Auckland. It is the ‘home’ of many of New Zealand’s top-selling beers including Steinlager, Speight’s, Mac’s, Lion Red, Stella Artois, Corona, Guinness and Wither Hills.
The Challenge
The new brewery was commonly referred to as Project Century - in reference to the facility’s projected life-span of 100 years. The facility was developed with a focus on quality, long-term performance and reduced environmental impact. Not surprisingly, the focus was also applied to the floors, and the challenge was to find a floor that could meet performance expectations and be non-slip, non-tainting, non-dusting, microbiologically inert and easy to clean.
Our Solution
Project engineers Beca chose Ucrete DP for the beer processing, packaging and warehousing areas. Lion Nathan had previously installed Ucrete DP floors in its Christchurch facility and the performance of these floors, together with its performance in other facilities made Ucrete DP an obvious solution.
Project Facts at a Glance
6,000m² of Ucrete installed at East Tamaki, including 1,200m² in the beer processing area and 3,500m in the packaging room.
With a crew of 12, Topcoat Specialist Coatings laid the 3,500m² packaging room floor in 5 days.
The floor’s short curing time enabled foot traffic after 8 hours, and vehicular traffic after 24 hours.

The Customer's Benefit
According to Mark Ambridge, General Manager of Topcoat Specialist Coatings:
Quality, toughness, longevity and ease of cleaning were of paramount importance. Ucrete DP delivered outstanding performance on all metrics.
Ucrete DP offers exceptional resistance to aggresive chemicals, heavy impact and temperatures from 40°C to 120°C.
Another major benefit of Ucrete DP was the speed of application. It was applied to a shot-blasted concrete floor slab at a thickness of 5 – 6mm. This was followed by broadcasting non-slip aggregate and a final roller coat application of the Ucrete topcoat.
